Amongst the best-known tourist destinations in Sicily, Taormina offers a perfect blend of stunning beaches, pristine nature and history. Part of the fascination of this charming hillside town in the Province of Messina lies in its panoramic position: its 11,000 inhabitants enjoy a splendid view over the Ionian Sea from a natural terrace on Mount Tauro, 200 m ASL. Taormina has long and richly layered history of peoples and cultures – from the Greeks to the Arabs, the Swabians and later the French – witnessed today by its outstanding historical and architectural heritage: first and foremost its world-famous ancient Greek theatre, the Roman Odeon, and a variety of archaeological remains preserved in the city’s Antiquarium. But Taormina is also fascinating for its splendid natural and marine scenery, which includes charming – and well-equipped – beaches: not to be missed Isola Bella, Giardini Naxos and Mazzarò.
